The College of Letters & Science is home to 39 academic departments, 22 academic non-departmental programs, five professional schools and 70 interdisciplinary research centers and institutes.  With 65 undergraduate majors, 39 undergraduate certificates and more than 100 graduate majors, we are the beating heart of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Students may pursue research opportunities during their first two years through the Undergraduate Research Scholars Links to an external site. program.  Students may write an senior thesis through the L&S Honors Program Links to an external site..  All of these are great opportunities to improve your critical thinking and complex communication skills, build your professional network, and demonstrate your depth of knowledge to an employer -- or to a graduate school admissions committee.

Writing Across the Curriculum Links to an external site.

Writing-intensive courses can be found at all levels of the curriculum, and in all sorts of majors -- it's more than just completing your "Comm A" and "Comm B" requirement.  And we have a world-famous Writing Center Links to an external site. to help you through all of your writing challenges -- whether for an elective course term paper or a job application cover letter.  Look for as many opportunities as you can to become the best writer that you can while you are here at UW.

"Software Training for Students (STS) offers FREE technology training and project support for registered UW-Madison students. [...]  Any student with an active UW NetID can attend STS’s FREE software workshops. We offer a wide range of 2-4 hour workshops on Photoshop, Excel, HTML and more."

"Half of all college graduates report completing at least one internship during their time as students.  This online course provides a way for UW students who have found exciting outside internships to earn academic credit in connection with their work experience.  Students will analyze their professional training experiences in the workplace in the context of the goals of a liberal arts and sciences university education, by practicing critical reading, writing, and observation skills.  A diverse variety of L&S professors teach this class over the course of the fall, spring, and summer terms."

"A variety of program options—over 200 programs in more than 60 countries—have been developed to address the diverse needs of students. Programs vary in length, level, academic focus, teaching format, language requirements, cost and degree of independence demanded of the participant. Each program is expected to meet the University's high academic standards and to integrate with the on-campus curriculum.  Currently, 1,300 students study abroad each year through our office, and around 150 students from our partner institutions abroad come to UW-Madison through exchange partnerships."

Career Fairs are held every Fall and Spring, usually in the Kohl Center.  These events allow students to connect with a diverse array of employers all in one spot, and allow employers to meet students from a diverse array of majors all in one day.  Check here Links to an external site. for scheduling information for the latest upcoming career fair.

"The UW Student Job Center focuses on student employment opportunities. Students seeking work will find part-time openings for both academic year and summer terms posted on our website as well as occasional full-time summer openings. Job opportunities are located at UW-Madison and off-campus in the private and public sectors."
