Read and reflect: Taking action

  • Due May 14, 2023 by 11:59pm
  • Points 2.5
  • Submitting a file upload

For this final article reading assignment, we will do a special article reflection on two career development articles, to think about how to take some of the lessons of this course out into the professional world.

Reading for this week: Action articles

  • Robin J. Ely and David A. Thomas, "Getting serious about diversity," Harvard Business Review (Nov-Dec 2020).
  • Bosses say they want to tackle racial injustice. (2020, June 11). The Economist.

Both of this week's articles were written for a professional business and managerial audience.  They represent the kinds of conversations about workplace culture and change that you will encounter as a new professional in your career.

For this week your response should depart from the "summary/reflection" script and do something a bit different.

Steps to follow

  1. As always: Budget your time, download the articles, read them carefully, and mark them up or take notes.
  2. Pick out two particular areas of advice that are most relevant to you, and write a reflection paragraph about each one. For each of these two areas of advice from the article, summarize what the author's recommendation is (and why the author makes that recommendation), and then write about why that particular piece of advice is important or useful for you, based on your own experiences or concerns about how diversity, equity, and inclusion issues will impact your particular career.
  3. Turn it in. Upload your two-paragraph reflection to Canvas to get credit for this assignment.
