This is a 25 year-old female preschool teacher, seven months pregnant, who is seeking help for a voice problem of approximately six months duration. The onset of her voice problem was coincident with a severe upper respiratory infection. Since that time her voice was variable in quality until the past two weeks when she became nearly aphonic. Although she reports that she is generally in good health, she is currently having difficulty with reflux related to her pregnancy and is fearful of going on any medications to correct the problem. Her pregnancy recently has also made it difficult to sleep well. Her history is negative for use or abuse of tobacco, alcohol and recreational activities that depend on voice. Her medical history is also negative for neurologic disease, hearing problems, respiratory problems, diabetes, high blood pressure or thyroid dysfunction. She is also currently pursuing a Master's degree in Speech Language Pathology.
